My personal is working on vista home basic. I have two virtual drives, C and D drive. My C drive is running out of space like 3 gigs left. My D drive has like 60 gigs. I’ve tried the vista utility to shrink and expand the drive, but it did not work as freed up space was not next to the C drive. I wondering if I should use Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 to either merge or move the freed up space to next to the C drive so i can extend. Any limitations? Like needing the vista boot disc cos i dun hav it? I also heard that the merge ability cannot work on vista. Any recommendations?

Yes it can be done. I would use a third celebration software. The much heralded ability of VIsta to deal with partitions in Disk Manager is IMHO is OTT as it is terribly under-specced.

Personally I’ve had difficulty with Acronis on Vista. Although it is Vista compatible, the changes regularly fail. So now I use Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8.5 (Paragon also do a cheaper Partition Manager). The interface is similar (but not as pretty as) Acronis. NB Disk Manager 8.0 does not support VIsta - so make sure it is 8.5.

Be aware that the D drive may be in an extended partition. Put simply, an extended partition is a container that holds other partitions. If that is the case you will need to shrink your D drive, then shrink the extended partition before you can expand the C drive (it is very unlikely that the C drive will be in an extended partition).

However, if you still want to use Vista's disk manager, simply delete the D drive altogether (of course you will have at first saved anything you want to keep onto DVD or flash drive etc). You should then be able to increase the C drive.

If you don't have vista install disks you need to be careful about deleting the d partition in case it contains your recovery program, wipe that and you will be unable to restore your machine should you ever need to. If you have install disks then there are various trial partition editors that will merge the D drive without losing your data, you can use bootitng for 30d before you have to purchase
