Good USB Hard-drive?
Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Hardware |
Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a good USB/external harddrive for my laptop since it only has 40GB, well 20GB since most is used for the CD player and Recovery System…
I'm willing to spend between £25 - £45 on 1 or possibly more if needed on a good repectable/reliable USB harddrive..
can you guys help me? Plz give me a list of them within my price range if you can….
Many thnx…
P.S - Can you only use a USB harddrive to save media? Can you also use the memory on it to install programs for your PC?
(10 points for the most detailed answer) - guaranteed lol!

I would suggest having a look at http://www.ebuyer.co.uk
I have bought a lot of gear from them, never had any problems and found them great value for money.
Saving media to a USB drive, that’s what they were designed for,as for installing to a USB drive, it's possible, but seriously not recommended as the next time you plug it in it may have a different drive letter

I'd try shopping around on E-bay. There are some good deals on second hand USB 2.0 supplemental external hard drives. Western Digital, Sony, Seagate would be some reliable name brands with warranties.

I've got a western Digital and it's never let me down.
You're ideal buying one on the web, somewhere like ebay or amazon. just type in USB harddrive and then sort by price and you'll get a pretty wide chioce to chose from. I'd advocate spending a bit more though, like about £60 and you'll get loads more space.
Don't go to Personal computer World or Dixons or anywhere like that as they charge a fortune.
You can use it to install programs as well as backing up files although they might not run too swift. This largely depends on the speed of your USB port though. If your laptop has USB 1.1 then it will be quite slow. If it's USB 2.0 then will be a lot quicker. Way to check is to look in device manager under Universal serial bus controllers and see if it states 2.0 enhanced in there. If it does then it's fast, if it doesn't then it's slow.
