i want to be able to access files on either while working on one or the other

im completely baffled and blond lol

Answer:
Number of ways.

If you have a router, you can setup sharing folders on XP and vista, and you can view the files in the shared folder. This is a good solution as whenever you connect to the router your automaticlaly connected to other files. (it does have a downside that your other personal must be on).

Another fast fix is using a crossover cable. They might look like the normal ethernet cables but the send/recieve wires on them are switched to allow sending and reciving off files. I've achieved speeds off maximum of 10MB/s using this method. It all depends on the cable, type of cable, computer network card , software and stuff.

Another method is using a firewire card (works similarly to the crossover but I think its much faster (400MBs as opposed to the Cat5100mbs.)

You can also use re writeable disks but I dnot think this is the solution your looking for.

If your a advanced user, you can pick up a pentium 2 somewhere, install linux on it, and install a 'file server'. This file server will allow you to access your files anywhere in the world as long as both of you guys have internet connection, and you know the IP of your server. (If your on cable/DSL high speed, most likely your IP is dynamic and this is not the best solution. Also some ISP's have it in there contract that hosting a server isn’t allowed).

anyways so yea the router solution is the best one,

Answer:
Cross over cable from pc to laptop will do the trick.

Make sure that in your network settings you’ve tcp/ip protocol on.

This should work I use to do it before i got a hub.

You’ll also have to alow “share folders”.
