Generally, it is safe to run CCleaner and I have never encountered any serious problems. Just make sure any open programmes are closed before using CCleaner, especially browsers. Under Windows you can tick all the boxes and leave Advanced unticked without any significant issues.
For World wide web Explorer, if you tick index.dat files you will need to reboot to get rid of them; if you select Auto-complete Form history you will lose any saved passwords - so for day to day usage, leave these unticked.
For Windows Explorer, you can safely tick all the boxes unless you wish to retain a list of recent documents - leave recent docs unticked.
For System, all boxes can be safely ticked unless you want to retain items in the clipboard - leave clipboard unticked.
Under applications, generally you can safely tick all the boxes as these just clean the temporary files generated by these programmes; if you have Firefox, ticking Saved Form Information will get rid of passwords.
Under multimedia, make sure any media players are shut before running - under utilities, sometimes the log files of Firewalls or Antivirus/antispyware tools can be deleted so if you have need of them don't tick the boxes - otherwise it is safe to run.
If it is a worry create a system restore point first. Or use ERUNT, a free tool which backs up your registry and restores it

Here is a CCleaner beginners guide

But unless you know what you're doing, leave the default settings as they are. And just to give you extra comfort when using it, create a system restore point.
Begin > Control Panel > Performance and Maintainence > System Restore
Then click 'create a restore point'. It is pretty self-explanitory form there. It will autmatically attach the exact date and time to it so you just need to give it a name that means something to you. Something like 'before ccleaner scan & clean' is a simple yet very explanitory name for it so you will be able to find it easily.

Hi!
No…
It will -when you click “analyze” TELL you which ones will be detremental to your existing Setup. “Data”, and like that’ll be modified -permanently- the next time you reboot, if you “clean” them.
ALWAYS click “analyze before”,
(and remove that “X”, -just my advice…)
… and -especially if uncertain- always! let it create a backup before you “clean” anything…
It's an EXCELLENT! tool, btw… }:>
EDIT: It is an EXCELLENT “trait” you’ve there…
It's VERY WISE of you to be “nervous” when approaching anything
you do not fully understand. (I talk from EXPERIENCE…)
Good LUCK! }:>
