Registry Mechanic reports Norton Internet Worm Protection is installed?
Posted on May 4th, 2008 in Security |
It reports:
Firewall software “Norton World wide web Worm Protection” is installed, but might not be active or running.
Clicking on “More Info” takes me to a web page suggesting that I upgrade to System Mechanic Pro…
This is annoying on two counts.
Firstly that the recommended solution for a non-problem is that I should part with more money, and
secondly - I removed Norton Suite 2006 in early 2007, and replaced it with Zone Alarm's Suite… How can I find what traces of Norton remain so that Registry Mechanic (and Belarc) don't think it's still there?
I’ve used Norton's removal tool, deleted any files / folders/ registry keys with “Norton” or “Symantec” in them, what more must I do?
There remains the possibility the Registry Mechanic is just making it up…their recommended solution does not inspire confidence…
Does anyone have any tips? Thanks.

I looked up on the net and I found discouraging news about System mechanic 7. It belonged to iolo, and they’re stated to be dodgy. Have a look at the link down below. It linked to a RED site - bestvistadownloads.com. I suggest you should remove this registry program of yours. When removed, run SUPERAntiSyware in safe mode and in deep scan, and then reboot. I'm not suggesting that you're infected, just better safe than sorry.

It sounds like you have a rogue antimalware or registry product; I use PC Tools Registry Mechanic and it doesn't flag legitimate software as potential problems nor does it link to web pages - run a scan with an antispyware tool such as Spybot or use Rogue Remover - free here

If you need a free registry and optimization tool, one of the ideal is Premium Booster which as luck would have it is free for this day only here

CCleaner is free to and has a decent registry cleaner

To be honest, I've never even heard of this program. Does it bother you that much? If you've used Norton's removal tool, it's likey everything is removed already. For registry cleaning, I use ccleaner.

I know you will hate this answer, but the ONLY was to effectively remove newer installations of Norton is an OS reinstall. It digs itself so totally into your OS that when removed will cause ghost errors and issues for years to come.
